Hi my multipotentialite pals!
2020 is nearly upon us. And, as is customary here on Puttylike, I’ve gone ahead and sketched out some goals and priorities for the new year. I’ll share those with you in a moment…
But first, let’s talk 2019.
2019 was an emotional year for me, with significant highs and lows. Here are a few things that really stand out:
Everything Conference
In September, we hosted our first-ever multipotentialite conference in Portland, Oregon. 100 multipods came together from as far away as Japan and New Zealand (and all over North America) to learn, connect, and collaborate with one another. I heard from many of our participants that ETC was nothing short of life-changing. It was a magical experience for me, too. Hugely affirming and so inspiring.
We’re planning on having the next Everything Conference in mid-2021. Head over here to get on the waitlist and stay up to date on all the news.
Queerdos
I wrote a TV pilot script! Over the course of the year, I got a TON of feedback and revised the script quite a few times. Criticism can really hurt, but I think I did a decent job of using it in a constructive way. I pitched the show, learned a thing or two about the television industry, made some connections, and was selected as a finalist in two screenwriting competitions.
Queerdos is the project I care most deeply about at the moment. It’s a coming-of-age series about queer teenagers, and it feels like a show that could really make a positive impact in young people’s lives. It’s definitely a show that could have changed my experience as a teen. I don’t believe in the “one true calling,” but right now I feel called to this work like nothing else.
My Dad + Cleveland
The most significant thing that happened in my life in 2019 was that my dad got sick. He was diagnosed with stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma this past June. Getting that news was a total reality check about what’s important to me. Valerie and I decided to move to Cleveland, Ohio for a few months–we definitely wanted to be around to help out, but I also really wanted to spend some quality time with my dad. I even interviewed him about his multipotentialite life! That will be out on Puttylike some time in the new year.
Valerie, Grendel, Gorse and I are still in Cleveland as I write this, though we’re leaving in just over a week. Although moving from our peaceful remote Canadian island to a midwestern American city was a huge shift, it was absolutely the right thing. Getting to hang out, talk, and drink lots of coffee with my dad was the best and I’m so grateful for my flexible, portable life.
The latest news is that my dad is officially in remission. He still has a few rounds of chemo left, but they didn’t find any cancer cells on his last scan. Wonderful news!
2020 Goals & Directions
So, what’s to come? Here are the main things I’d like to focus on over the next twelve months:
1. Launch Puttylike 2.0 and grow the Puttylike community
I am quietly, behind-the-scenes, conferring with my wonderful programmer to get the new Puttylike design ready for your eyes! Actually, we’ve been working on it for months now.
The new website is beautiful. I’m pretty much in love with it. 🙂
We hope to launch the new site in Spring 2020. And then I will be focusing on getting the Puttylike message out to new readers. Puttylike 2.0 will be a “magazine style” website–simple to navigate, with articles that are easy on the eyes. I will always have love in my heart for our old (current) design. I cobbled it together in 2010, and it has served us well, but it’s time to level up!
I hope you love the changes that are coming. And, if they’re unsettling at first, I think they’ll grow on you. Ultimately, this is something we need to keep Puttylike feeling relevant in the years to come and to grow into our full potential.
Also, Puttylike will be celebrating its 10 year anniversary on September 27, 2020. That is absolutely bonkers! I have to come up with some kind of magnificent way for us to all celebrate together!!! Let me know if you have any ideas?
2. Keep pitching Queerdos
Obviously, Queerdos is on my list. I will continue pitching, networking and doing everything I can to get my little teen drama sold and produced. If none of that works, I might even decide to produce it independently. We shall see!
3. Become more resilient + self-sufficient
This is a pretty personal goal. No one knows how bad the climate crisis will get (or how it will play out), but it’s important to me to be more self-sufficient and more tightly integrated within my local community.
Last summer, a friend created a huge fenced garden on our property. In summer 2020, it will be up to me and Valerie to grow our vegetables. Growing food will be a new skill for us, and it’s one that I’m eager to learn. Nothing like eating sun-warmed veggies fresh from the yard. I also want to learn some first aid and continue to grow my general rural life skills.
Relatedly, I’m feeling pulled to consume less and to order fewer things online. For instance, I LOVE Christmas, but this year more than ever, I’ve been feeling very conscious of and a little guilty about the consumerism that is so entwined with the holiday season. Environmentally, spiritually… It just doesn’t feel good to buy things right now. I feel these shifts starting to happen within me, and I welcome them…even when they feel difficult and weird.
4. Center relationships
Finally, I’m going to be prioritizing relationships in 2020. Not all relationships, just the ones that matter most to me—my family (biological and chosen), online friends, and neighbours. I would like to spend more time with people I love. I want to fight that force inside that sometimes tells me I’m wasting time when I’m relaxing, hanging out with friends, or otherwise being “unproductive.” Fuck that voice! It doesn’t come from a healthy place.
So, there you have it: a rough overview of my priorities and directions in 2020.
I’m so ready to get home, nestle in, and focus on what matters.
Here’s to another year of mutual support, kindness and collaboration with the greatest community I’ve ever known: you all.
Happy new year, multipotentialites!
xo Emilie

Michael Hurley says
Goals for the new year, good question. To be honest I haven’t really thought about the new year that much. Having done a great many things in my life I’ve kind of reached a point where I’ve been just sitting back and reflecting. The usual reflections about things I’ve done, things I should have done, things I want to do.
I have written four novels none of which are published. So goal one will be to get one published and go from there. I’ve been working on my photography which is an on going labour of love. I’d like to do more with it. See what else I can accomplish as a photographer.
And what else, hmmm. . .something to think about. Do some more traveling as well as settle a few more old ghosts. I’d like to look for something new. Not sure what but something.
So beyond what I’ve written here I will keep thinking about my goals for 2020 and go from there. After all it’s the journey not the destination that matters.
Cheers

Mr. Hurley,
Love the shape of your passion pursuits and your intention. I wish for you whatever you wish for you!
I hope to get my furniture promoted by designers, self publish my book about inspiring women, begin teaching QiGong in the local high schools to troubled teens- as an alternative to Xanax for coping with stresses.
Most of all, I intend to find a lot and build my container home, which although small will have a great room, a wrap around deck because living is outdoors when possible and will be completely functional, with no loft sleeping!
Thank you for your inspiration, kind Sir. Numerologically speaking, you have a very interesting name.
Be well,
Kimberly

Yes, it’s definitely the journey that matters. Enjoy your 2020, Michael! It sounds like it’ll be very nice.

You are living your best life, even though your dad got sick, we all know it’s part of life and I’m sure he’ll get better and it makes the whole family only STRONGER! 🙂
I found your blog thanks to some Medium article a few months ago and I’m fascinated that you’ve greated a huge community with your blog for people who enjoy doing almost EVERYTHING.
A quick note about myself – I’m a engineering student from Estonia and besides school I run my own platform-based company for starting musicians and a new startup which builds electric bamboo bicycles. This year I somehow ended up as an machine learning intern and caught up with my old hobby – programming. It’s fun going deep into code for awhile when I’m responsible for sales and management in my firms most of the time.
My hopes are that I can get to visit your Everything Conference in 2021 but unfortunately coming from Estonia to the US is a long shot for me.
Have a nice day and may the new decade bring you more happinness than ever!
Toomas.
Emilie says
Thank you, Toomas! Your projects sound amazing. Electric bamboo bicycles?!! Incredible.
Happy new year!

I always love to read every article that you guys write and love to read what you’ll be focusing next year! I can’t wait to see the new version. Unfortunately I was unable to attend in 2019 but I’m happy to see that there will be an event in 2021,hopefully it helps resolve the issue that this event is so far away from me (I’m from Portugal).
I want to fight that force inside that sometimes tells me I’m wasting time when I’m relaxing, hanging out with friends, or otherwise being “unproductive.”
I’d love to hear more about how you handle this because this is exactly me! I kinda wish I was not this person.
Emilie says
Thanks Catherine! Hope to meet you in 2021. And I will write more about that as I figure it out myself. 🙂
Cammie says
Hi Emilie!
First of all, I absolutely love this post. I find that I’m often pressured into thinking about resolutions without taking the time to reflect on what the year has brought, so I found this exercise delightful. Also, I’m glad to know your father is recovering well. 🙂
While on the subject of 2020, though, one of my goals is to get my interview project, Creatheory.com, back on track. For that, I was wondering if you’d be open to a quick Skype interview sometime next year! I’m a huge admirer of your work – learning that I am a multipotentialite has helped me so significantly and it would really be an honor to share some of your words of wisdom through the project.
Please let me know if you’re interested. Regardless, happy new year! ?
Emilie says
Thanks so much, Cammie.
I appreciate the invitation but I’m not doing interviews right now. Best of luck with your project and happy new year!
Anna Weisend says
Thanks for sharing. Some of my goals are similar (as in redefining “productivity”). I am also declaring it my year of Joy.
I hope you enjoyed your time in Cleveland. I live here and I think it is much more fantastic than most people give it credit. If you are ever back and I’d love to take you for coffee!
Here’s to 2020 being a great year!
Emilie says
Thanks, Anna!

I’m so glad your dad is in remission. I wish him health and a long and happy life.
As for my goals, I would like to take my creativity a step forward and sell my ceramics (I’m a potter in my spare time). And also find a job where I can make use of my ideas and problem-solving tendencies!
I am constantly inspired by your work, thank you for sharing what you do.
Emilie says
Thanks so much, Francesca. And what great goals! Enjoy!

Congratulations on all you have achieved in 2019 Emilie! Getting Queerdos out there, and becoming a finalist in 2 comps is a great accomplishment. May this open the door to launching the project where it can truly have impact.
I think being a multipod gives us the flexibility to move and change direction and priorities as we desire or if the unexpected arises. The silver lining of the cloud that was your father’s diagnosis is the quality time you got to spend with him. Perhaps this was a factor in his remission…..
As for me, I have resigned from my job effective mid-January. This opens up some new possibilities, as well as affording more space to pursue the hobbies and interests that at times feel crammed into my schedule. New interests I plan to pursue will be joining the local writers’ group; and the Country Women’s Association. The latter is a group which promotes the interests of rural women and families across the country. A very important organisation at this time of widespread drought and bushfires throughout Australia.
Some degree of self-sufficiency is a long held goal. We live off-grid, and drought has impeded my ability to grow a lot of my own food. In the meantime I mulch, water as much as I can, pick a few things here and there, plan, and take heart in knowing that the drought will eventually break. All the best with your new gardening venture Emilie! It is wonderfully rewarding to pick and eat your own produce.
Emilie says
Thank you so much, Jo. Your plans for the new year sound wonderful. Sending lots of love to you over there!

Hey Emilie!
Very interesting post, really inspiring to read. 🙂
I chose a word for 2020 : delicious. To me, that intention means making happen, celebrating and paying attention to more : freedom, pleasure, joy, love and space (as in quiet and slow pace).
I am working hard on finding ways to satisfy the multipotentialite in me by making space for everything I love the most : creating (writing, painting/drawing/illustrating), teaching/sharing (social media/workshops/podcast?) and doing more the work I love so much as a psychologist, passionate about everything human. After 10 years of researching EVERYTHING about we work individually and together avidly, I am exploring what I want to do do with all these treasures besides working with my patients.
On that note, following a weird inkling : what I found the most disapppointing in TV shows my whole life was how they were not realistic enough humanly, based more on what we would like people to be rather than how we work, and for teen programs especially, how the occasion wasn’t grabbed to give them clues on how to navigate life, relationships and sexuality more happily, lovingly and joyfully. If you’d be interested in this, my whole life is all about normalising emotional and relational education, I’d LOVE to support your project in any way, queer teens need so badly beautiful programs to empower them and support their self-love. Supporting this beautiful goal my own surely would be delicious. <3
Good luck anyway!
Emilie says
Delicious!!! Yes! I love this.
Thank you for your thoughts on television. I completely agree. And I think much of the praise (and criticism) I’ve received on my script has to do with how realistic I tried to make the characters. It’s more about interpersonal (and internal) conflict and growth than it is about “edginess” (which teen dramas tend to emphasize). I honestly think real life has plenty of drama.
Anyway, I would love to learn more about your work and connect sometime!

2019 was a year for focusing. I completed several of my outstanding projects and struggled to not add more at the same time. I was able to complete several books and did a lot of foundational work for the areas I want to focus on in 2020. I’m planning on releasing a couple courses and expanding my passive income. I added several coaching clients in 2019 and hope to do more in 2020. I was able to finish several books in 2019 and I hope to do an additional 6 in 2020. I’ve got the writing and publishing down to a science. I just need get better at the marketing 🙂
I’m hoping to reduce my working hours and do more stuff remotely and not traveling for work as much. I still want to travel, but I’d like to do more working while I’m traveling. Vacations have never made sense to me because my brain is always thinking about numerous things. I’d rather have a couple hours to relax each day rather than trying to cram it all in during a week somewhere. Besides, there’s probably too much to explore there anyway.
Emilie says
Sounds good, Robert!

Hi Emilie,
I just stumbled upon this write-up while doing my 2019 reflection blog. I guess I was looking for inspiration on how I can make my 2020 any different from my previous years. I actually went back a decade ago when I was writing my pre-2010 reflections.
I always tend to forget myself so I’d like to begin 2020 by being good to myself. And a sort of self-happiness list. https://www.travelingpinoy.com/posts/a-decade-of-reflection

Good to hear your dad is better. I agree that the silver lining is spending quality time with him. When I look back at when my mom was ill that time spent with her now feels precious.
I have just a few projects scheduled for 2020.
I have been reading a lot about Redox and Agronomy and would like to pursue that further. I have also just bought 4 55 gallon barrels for a biochar project. (Might be good for your garden to get a bit of biochar mixed into the soil) Am looking for 4 30 gallon barrels with removable lids in case anyone near me might have some laying around.
Will continue to work on growing my Organic Supplier Copywriting business. Spreading the word about Organic food and how important Soil is to the nutrient density of food is my biggest passion.
My partner and I live on a homestead and will be putting up a shed this summer. We have had bees (they died in the winter of 2018) but we will be experimenting with wild bees this year. I’m totally geeked about that! I’ll be documenting the results.
My partner is a Chiropractor and I work as her Chiropractic Assistant and Billing Manager part-time. I want to include a monthly Chiro newsletter to my duties there to grow her business. Would also like to write Chiro blogs for others, we’ll see how that goes.
My personal website “Homesteading for Old Folks” needs some sprucing up also.
As I write this I think I need to consider prioritizing interests, (I read your book Emilie) so I need to add complete exercises to my goals for 2020. It’ll help me focus, ya think?
Have a great 2020. So glad I found this group. Really hope you get Queerdos produced. Would have helped a lot of people I know through their teen years.
Emilie says
Wow! All of your projects sound amazing, Jackie. I want to check out your website!

Great article Emilie! I’ll miss you and Valerie as you depart Cleveland, and was blessed to spend quality time with each you (and Neil, Jill and Sanya at Table Top). It’s not often to get to meet and entertain someone you’ve admired via book or online. It was a pleasure to meet you at the ETC and hang out in Cleveland. I’m happy that your dad is once again on the path to health. Safe travels. Keep in touch. Ryan
