What Matters

I was in the kitchen the other day, making apple-cinnamon cookies and listening to Joni Mitchell.

My mom came in and cocked her head, perplexed and amused.

MOM
Joni Mitchell?

EMILIE
(looking up)

Yeah.

MOM
I didn’t know you liked Joni Mitchell.

(beat)

I think I’m beginning to understand your whole thing, and what you’re all about.

EMILIE
What do you mean?

MOM
Well it’s like, follow your dreams at all costs… Even if it means couchsurfing.

It’s something like that. xo.

Ah parents. What a cute/funny little post for my Monday morning.

    • Emilie says:

Yeah, a little homage to my mom. These moments are one good thing about living at home. I’m trying to collect as many of them as possible during this temporary stint between adventures.

Glad you enjoyed it, Angela. :)

  2. It’s great to be understood. Sometimes that’s all we can ask for.

<3 Moms. And daughters. And cookies.

  4. Brian Gerald says:

    Love it!

The I-went-to-film-school screenplay editor in me wants to strike out “(looking up)” and “(beat)” from your script ;)

    • Emilie says:

Hah Brian! There’s nothing wrong with my “(looking up)” and “(beat)”. It might not be 100% by the book, but in practice, it’s done all the time, no? Many TV scripts I’ve read use those all over the place. The only thing that is really wrong in my post is the usage of the past tense in the description and “perplexed and amused” might be too “internal”, though even that might pass in a TV script. ;)

I intentionally broke the rules though for the sake of the post. Heh..

      Lol.. anyway…

      Thanks!!

  5. Love love love it!!

    Help me, I think I’m falling…

This was a nice post :)
I joined The Couch Surfing the day before you published this as well, looking forward to doing it this summer.

Hey I have been couchsurfing through South America, I don’t even need to do it for financial reasons but it’s the ONLY way to get the inside track on a place. Staying with locals has totally changed my trip.

    • Emilie says:

Absolutely. What makes traveling awesome is the people you meet on your journey. (My mom doesn’t actually know what couchsurfing is, so don’t be offended. :)

  8. Rob says:

haha! I LOVE this post! No bullshit, and straight to the point. Your mum sounds awesome :)

    • Emilie says:

I was originally going to do what I usually do and pull out a lesson or two from my story. But after writing it out, I just thought, nah, this story stands on its own. Sometimes you gotta break the rules. :)

      Thanks Rob!

  9. Gian Sorreta says:

One of the things I truly appreciate from my parents is that they will always have my back.

I’m glad you have the same luxury :)

  10. Mike Carlson says:

    I’m a parent.

We know a whole lot about our kids.

Until they grow up. It’s a whole new discovery process. I suspect it’s because they go from being mini-me’s to their own person, whom they don’t even recognize yet.

Life is bizarre, which makes it all worth it :)
